COUNSELLING & PSYCHOTHERAPY

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

You are likely to see both of these terms used separately and in conjunction with one another whilst searching for therapy.  There are many differing views on the internet about what they mean and how they are different from one another.  My personal view is that counselling is ideal for working with the issues that you face here and now, on a daily basis and it helps to give you tools to work through these in order to maintain a healthy state of being.  Counselling is likely to be, although not always the case, a smaller number of sessions working through your current difficulties.

Psychotherapy is generally more long term work, working through to find the root cause of the difficulties that you face in your life.  It looks to seek answers from your past experiences and your childhood in order to explain why you are experiencing struggles today.

The way I work - my role as a therapist

I work from an integrative perspective, drawing on a range of theories and approaches, including Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, and Cognitive Behavioural therapies, to help you understand the root of your feelings.

My practice incorporates various media, such as art, visualisations, and psychoeducation, to encourage self-reflection, curiosity, and insight into experiences that may currently feel confusing or overwhelming.

I also use specialised techniques like BWRT (Brain Working Recursive Therapy) and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) to support your personal growth and healing.

I listen with the intention to truly understand your lived experience and offer thoughtful interpretations to help you explore the possible origins of your challenges.

The initial process explained

An initial short phone call will be scheduled with you and this is an opportunity for us to touch base before meeting and enables me to gather some information from you regarding what brings you to therapy.  It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have.  You will need to feel comfortable and at ease with the therapist that you choose, so this phone call is important for you to see if I am the right therapist for you.  Equally, it is an opportunity for me to clarify if I can help you, or whether I feel a more specialist therapist or other professional would be more suited to your needs.

If we mutually agree to work together, then a full initial consultation session will be booked.

Initial consultation

This the first session where we will spend some time getting to know each other and where I will take some details regarding your history, what brings you to therapy and find out what you would like to get out of our sessions together.

Therapy sessions

These sessions will form the main part of our work together where we work through your difficulties aiming for the goals that you set out in the initial consultation.

Each session is 50 minutes long and sessions normally occur once a week.  The amount of sessions required will depend on how you feel you are progressing. This is something that we can assess at regular intervals, normally every 6 sessions.

(Last session available at 5pm-6pm)

Therapy helps you to grow from the inside, out.

“Listen with curiosity. Speak with honesty. Act with integrity. The greatest problem with communication is we don’t listen to understand. We listen to reply. When we listen with curiosity, we don’t listen with the intent to reply. We listen for what’s behind the words.”
