COUNSELLING & PSYCHOTHERAPY

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

You are likely to see both of these terms used separately and in conjunction with one another whilst searching for therapy.  There are many differing views on the internet about what they mean and how they are different from one another.  My personal view is that counselling is ideal for working with the issues that you face here and now, on a daily basis and it helps to give you tools to work through these in order to maintain a healthy state of being.  Counselling is likely to be, although not always the case, a smaller number of sessions working through your current difficulties.

Psychotherapy is generally more long term work, working through to find the root cause of the difficulties that you face in your life.  It looks to seek answers from your past experiences and your childhood in order to explain why you are experiencing struggles today.

The way I work - my role as a therapist

I am trained to work from an Integrative perspective using a range of modalities, theories and perspectives, including Person-Centred theory, Psychodynamic theory and Cognitive behaviour theory, to help you get to the bottom of why you are feeling this way.  I use a lot of different media in my work, including props, art, visualisations and psycho-education to encourage you to be curious about yourself, to reflect on your experiences and to help you piece together all the things that currently don't make sense to you.  I use a range of therapies and techniques to facilitate your personal growth and development and to help you find the strength to put in the work to heal yourself.  I will listen with the intention of understanding your lived experiences, I will endeavour to offer interpretations of my understanding with the aim of helping you to gain insight into the possible causes of your difficulties.

The initial process explained

An initial consultation lasting 50 minutes is an opportunity for us to meet and for me to gather some information from you regarding what brings you to therapy.  It is also an opportunity for both of us to determine whether we can work together.  You will need to feel comfortable and at ease in the presence of the therapist that you choose, so this consultation is important for you to see if I am the right therapist for you.  Equally, it is an opportunity for me to clarify if I can help you, or whether I feel a more specialist therapist or other professional would be more suited to your needs.

If we mutually agree to work together, then a subsequent session will be booked for the following week.

Sessions and fees

Each session is 50 minutes long and sessions normally occur once a week.  The amount of sessions required will depend on how you feel you are progressing. This is something that we can assess at regular intervals, normally every 6 sessions.

Initial consultation

This the first session where we will spend some time getting to know each other and where I will take some details regarding your history, what brings you to therapy and find out what you would like to get out of our sessions together.

Therapy sessions

These sessions will form the main part of our work together where we work through your difficulties aiming for the goals that you set out in the initial consultation.

Fees

50 minute session - 9am-5pm - £50

Cancellation Policy

I request 48 hours minimum notice for cancellation of a session and there will be no charge for this.  If however, you give less than 48 hours notice, full session fees will be payable as I am unlikely to be able to fill the session at short notice.

Payment methods

Initial consultation fees are taken when submitting the initial intake forms online - these are sent to you after booking an appointment.  The payment link takes you to Natwest where you can pay by online banking.  Further payments for subsequent sessions can be made by this link too.

All session fees must be paid in advance before the session commences.

I am currently not accepting insurance payments.

How can I help you?

“Listen with curiosity. Speak with honesty. Act with integrity. The greatest problem with communication is we don’t listen to understand. We listen to reply. When we listen with curiosity, we don’t listen with the intent to reply. We listen for what’s behind the words.”
